A memorial ceremony (memorial service) is similar to a funeral service in that it allows family and friends to gather to honor a departed loved one.
Like a funeral ceremony (funeral service), the memorial ceremony can be formal or casual, religious or secular; and the program can vary from simple to elaborate. Unlike a funeral service, a memorial service usually does not include having the deceased present.
A memorial service may be held at any time following the death of a loved one and can be held in any location that is meaningful to family and friends.
Memorial ceremonies are often held following cremation. Often a memorial service will be held if the body could not be recovered or was buried too far away for family and friends to travel.
When family and friends are scattered and separated by long distance and find travel difficult on short notice, the memorial service will be delayed often for a lengthy period of time until travel is possible.
