The practice of cremation dates back to ancient
times. Today, it is more common in parts of Europe and Japan but is also becoming popular
in the United States.
Cremation is a process by which the body is
prepared for final disposition. Over a period of 2 to 3 hours, the body is transformed by
intense heat into small skeletal fragments. The cremains do not look like fine ash as some
people imagine.
The cremains (cremated remains) of an average
adult will weigh 5 to 7 pounds and are usually placed in a small cardboard box by the
crematory. The cremated remains are then returned to the family for final disposition.
Cremation is an option that we provide at
Koller Funeral Home and
Cremation Center Inc. The following provides some general information, and we invite you
to contact us to discuss your specific questions.
Services or
ceremonies may precede or follow the actual cremation. Prior
to cremation, there may be a private or public viewing and/or funeral service with the
casketed body present. This casket could be a rented unit which is designed
for this purpose. If a service is held following cremation, an urn is often
used and can then be taken to its final resting place.
Regardless of the order of events, it is for the
benefit of the living that arrangements for a ceremony are made. Psychologists have found
that denial is a natural part of the grief process. Viewing the body of the deceased can
help to overcome grief by accepting the fact that a death has occurred. Funeral ceremonies
also have value in offering family and friends the opportunity to honor their loved one.
It is the final event in a person's life and offers loved ones a chance to say a last
goodbye.
Usually the cremated remains are placed in a
container called an urn. Sometimes the urn is kept at home. More often, it is placed in a
columbarium niche or in a cemetery plot. In areas where it is permitted, cremated remains
may be scattered over land or water. The decision of scattering should be carefully
considered because, of course, the process is irreversible.
Costs will vary according to the type of
services that are used. Factors affecting the cost could be: the type of ceremony/service,
the cremation container, casket or rental casket, urn, burial site, etc.
Making any kind of funeral arrangements involves
many choices and decisions. It is important to consider all options and take time to ask
questions before making a final decision.
